EWR-SFO-LAX-SYD-MEL-LAX
I’ve been on the road for 3.5 weeks, I’m in the final stretch and on the plane heading home to NJ after an amazing experience. My trip began with client meetings in SF where I was able to spend time with some of my fantastic team. We shared an Airbnb, shared some laughs and did karaoke with our clients. Those few days were amazing. The team left feeling inspired, energized, and appreciated. The clients shared feedback about the team I hand selected to work with them, and it was beyond anything I could have dreamt up.
From SF, I went down to LA, where I enjoyed the Business Chicks Knowledge and Study tour for a week at UCLA. I managed to squeeze in a few more client meetings and spend more time with some of my team before I jetted off to Sydney. In Sydney, I attended yet another Business Chicks event, the 9 to Thrive Summit. This event was an all-day summit with over 2000 women in business. I brought one of my best recruiters with me to that event. She flew in all the way from LA. We were able to have deep conversations about life and work. We agreed that when women support each other and are intentional about our goals, dreams, aspirations anything in the world is possible. There are no limits.
From Sydney, I went to Melbourne to meet with a friend/colleague and share some learnings about what Dot does, and why it works in our market in the US. We tag teamed some client meetings of his in the startup scene in Melbourne. It was interesting to see the shift from companies primarily only being open to an agency/fee-based recruitment model, to now being excited about the Talent Advisory model. The net-net is that companies don’t just want reqs filled anymore, they want a partner. Someone they trust, who provides them with a different level of service and insight into the market. This is so valuable for not only the startups but the scaleups and enterprises. Gone are the days of just filling reqs and moving on to the next req. The new age of recruiting is about relationships, deep ones that transcend clients and companies. One of my key clients now was a landed through a relationship I had with a candidate who declined my offer for a different client earlier last year. Throughout that process, the candidate and I became close and I was more than just her “recruiter”, I was her Talent Advisor, her personal, unbias confidant, not interested in making a placement fee or closing a req, only interested in ensuring that she landed a job that was right for her and aligned with her goals personally and professionally. Sure, I was bummed when she didn’t accept the offer for my client, but I was also happy that she found a better fit for her elsewhere. That relationship turned into a referral and endorsement for me, which ended up being the jumping off point in my professional journey that led us to where we are today.
As I wrapped up 3.5 action-packed weeks, I recanted that story in a meeting with a new potential client and watched their faces light up. That is exactly what they want, a Talent Advisor. To see the light bulbs go off in their heads in a very agency driven market like Melbourne is so exhilarating. Given my personal ties to Australia, I am beyond excited to work with Simon McSorley and be a part of this disruption. #dotgoesglobal
