Three Big Things
As many of us do at this time of year, I’ve been reflecting on this past year but also this past decade. My Facebook “memories” pop up and remind me of how far I’ve come, but yet how much I’m still in the thick of it and how much more I have to learn. I have 3 big things I will take with me into the new year.
My biggest take away from 2019: PATIENCE.
To have patience with others and to have patience with myself. In a world of instant gratification, when the spinning pinwheel often annoys us, it’s a good reminder to slow down. When we feel like we aren’t moving fast enough, or I’m not where I want to be, I’ve learned to have patience.
Transitioning into the role I have now and having a team of people that I’ve hand-selected to join me on this journey of startup life, there is nothing more important than my ability to exercise patience. I place high expectations on my team. I demand the best and expect the best because that is how I am wired. This year, I realized that we are all still learning. Learning how to operate as a unit. Learning that we are only as good as the newest member on the team. Learning how to lead in a way that is nurturing and not controlling. Learning that all good things don’t happen overnight. Good things, like the really really good things, happen when you show up every single day and you’re consistent. You show up and you build trust with your team, your clients, your candidates, your family. When you build trust, you build equity and when you have equity in yourself, the whole world can be what you want it to be.
My 2nd big take away from 2019: FORGIVENESS.
Forgiveness with others and forgiveness with myself. The beauty of being human is that we are just that. We make mistakes, we mess up, but with every curveball, is an opportunity to rethink our approach, to redefine the rules, and redefine how things are done. We don’t have to rely on bad behaviors from the past to muddy the path to our future. We can forgive, we can let go, and we can grow.
My 3rd big take away from 2019: RELATIONSHIPS.
I’ve made more meaningful relationships with people in the past year than I ever could imagine. I’ve poured into these relationships with no expectation of return and let myself experience them for what they are at that moment. It’s been rewarding and fulfilling. I’ve planted seeds in a beautiful garden of friendships from all over the world that bloom more and more every day.
I feel ready for this crazy experimental year of trials, tribulations, highs, and lows to end with a bow-tied box on it. 2019 has been one for the books and I cannot wait to see what is in store for the first year of a new decade.
